Your Dexa Scan
DEXA stands for ‘dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry’ and is a test that measures the density of your bones. The bones most commonly scanned are the spine, hips and forearm.
DEXA is entirely painless and non-invasive. A DEXA scan uses low-energy x-rays. This means it is safe for the radiographer/technician doing the scan to stay in the room with you at all times.
The duration of the scan varies depending on the part of your body that is being examined. Your scan could take up to an hour but please leave plenty of time for your appointment. Unlike an MRI or a CT scan there is no ‘tunnel’ or ‘tube’ to pass through so you should not feel claustrophobic.
