Mr Zulfiquar Rahimtoola is an internationally well-recognized hand surgeon with a comprehensive understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions affecting the hand and wrist.
He is extensively fellowship trained and has successfully completed the European Diploma for Hand Surgery in Paris (European Board Certification). He has recently returned from Europe where he was invited to work as an Associate Professor at the UMCU, Utrecht Medical Center University.
He started the study of Medicine at the University of Bristol and through the Erasmus European exchange program he qualified as a Medical Doctor at the University of Leiden in 1996.The year after he spent as a Research Fellow at Stanford University.
In 1998 he commenced his specialist registrar training in the Netherlands. During his training he developed a keen interest in hand and wrist surgery and combined his clinical work with academic research on the treatment of arthritic disorders of the wrist. He is well published in various papers and is invited to present and lecture in different centres throughout the Globe. His research resulted in a PhD thesis on surgery of the wrist in rheumatoid arthritis which he successfully completed in 2005.
After qualifying as an Orthopaedic Surgeon he worked in four different international centres of excellence in hand surgery including Barcelona, Paris, Derby and Wrightington. Through his academic research and extensive postgraduate fellowship training he has become an Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon with a comprehensive understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions affecting the hand and wrist.
Internationally he remains an honorary consultant at Leiden and Utrecht University. He continues to practice and teach hand surgery in London, Reading and Amsterdam, and is invited as guest faculty and lecturer on many global hand surgery symposia and international society conferences.
His NHS practice is at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Reading, including Bracknell, Henley, Wokingham and Marlow satellite clinics. Private consultations in London, Reading Berkshire and Amsterdam.
