Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
Mr D. Pimenides is a Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon and director of the corneal, external eye diseases and refractive surgery service at Broomfield Hospital, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. He also practices general Ophthalmology and performs modern refractive cataract surgery.
He was initially trained in Neurosurgery and completed his basic and higher surgical Ophthalmic training in the UK. He was awarded the ‘UK Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training in Ophthalmology’ in 2005. He subsequently completed his sub specialisation training in cornea, external eye diseases, cataract and refractive surgery at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London (from 2005-2008). He was then appointed at the Consultant grade at Broomfield hospital, where he developed his sub specialisation service and participated in the delivery of modern cataract surgery. More specifically, the service he developed offers full and partial thickness corneal transplant surgery, corneal transplantation combined with cataract extraction and lens implant, reconstruction of the anterior segment of deformed eyes, visual rehabilitation of severely burned eyes and correction of undesirable refractive errors (shortsightness, etc).
He also conducted research in basic sciences and clinical medicine. He was awarded a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge and received a studentship from the University of Cambridge, School of Clinical Medicine and a research grant from the Wellcome Trust. He later obtained a PhD degree.
He was the Clinical Lead in Ophthalmology at MEHT from 2011-2013 and he has been the Medical Advisory Committee Ophthalmology representative at Springfield hospital.
