James White is a Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon at one of London’s leading teaching hospital Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). He is a founding member of the Grosvenor Orthopaedic Partners LLP.
His practice encompasses all aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery including arthroscopy, arthroplasty and trauma. He has a reputation as a thorough clinician, effective communicator and skilled surgeon. Through joint decision-making with the patient and utilising non-operative techniques where possible, he achieves the best possible outcomes for patients. When surgery is required, James has excellent outcomes based on his precise and prepared approach to operating.
James has a tertiary referral practice at GSTT for shoulder and elbow surgery trauma and elective problems, including the surgical reconstruction of complex shoulder and elbow injuries.
His high volume young adult/sports shoulder and elbow practice adds to his complete shoulder and elbow service. At GSTT he runs a successful Trauma and Elective practice for both his local central London population, as well as a tertiary referral centre for the expertise of GSTT from patients all around the UK.
Having completed Shoulder and Elbow fellowships at the world renowned Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter and an Upper Limb Fellowship in central London, he has developed expert skills in arthroscopic and open management of all shoulder and elbow conditions. He has also had significant experience in shoulder and elbow replacement primary and revision surgery.
As the upper limb trauma surgeon for a busy central London hospital trauma department, James has regular trauma and elective operating, and ensures that his patients have excellent care. He has extensively published in peer reviewed journals and presented internationally on many aspects of trauma and elective surgery. He has coauthored book chapters on upper limb surgery and coauthored the National Guidelines -Blue Book- for the treatment of distal radius fractures for the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) for which he was nominated for the Best of the Best National award.
James is the Education lead for the core trainee surgeons at GSTT, and has completed Advanced Certficates in Medical Education. He regularly organises and teaches on courses related to shoulder and elbow surgery, including as an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor. He is Co-lead of the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship programme at GSTT, responsible for training fully qualified orthopaedic surgeons to become specialist shoulder and elbow surgeons.
As a member of BOA and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society BESS- James ensures that he is up to date with all advances and techniques in orthopaedic and sports surgery. This thirst for improvement comes from his back ground of graduating from University College London medical school (UCL) with his medical degree (MBBS), as well as a 1st class degree in Human Genetics. James completed his training in the highly competitive North West Thames Deanery. He is Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England for Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery.
Arthroscopic Shoulder and Elbow surgery: shoulder and elbow instability, rotator cuff tears, tendon injuries, frozen shoulder, soft tissue reconstruction and arthritis.
Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty: shoulder replacement surgery (hemiarthoplasty, total shoulder – stemmed/short-stemmed/stemless, and reverse) and Elbow total and hemi-replacement. He utilises modern 3D planning techniques to ensure accurate implant placement.
Upper Limb Trauma: significant experience in complex reconstruction of shoulder and elbow bony and soft tissue trauma including arthroplasty.
